Good News From Around the World

Here are two of several columns I researched and wrote for this monthly Reader’s Digest vertical before the magazine discontinued its Canadian operations in 2024.

In the context of journalistic reporting, I prefer not to state outright whether news is good, bad, some complicated mixture of the two or something about which we should reserve judgment. After all, the same facts could carry different significance for different readers.

However, I recognize that columns like this one create space for a wider variety of news stories, including stories that could inspire advocacy, the sharing of constructive ideas and a counterbalance against “mean world syndrome.”

All to say, I might have preferred a different title for this column, but I’m very fond of these news briefs.
